Commentary: Wildlife management professionals need to redefi ne the terms: lethal control, nonlethal control, and live trap

چکیده
I argue that the terms lethal control, nonlethal control, and live trap are no longer suffi ciently precise for continued use in the scientifi c community. Their continued use confuses the public and allows animal protectionists to use them as cudgels in political discourse. Alternative terms are recommended to resolve the semantic and subsequent political issues surrounding the traditional terms.

What's in a name? Perceptions of stray and feral cat welfare and control in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
New Zealanders (n = 354) rated the acceptability of lethal and nonlethal cat control methods and the importance of conservation and welfare. Lethal control was more acceptable for feral cats than strays; for nonlethal control, the inverse was true. More than concern for the welfare of cats subjected to control, perceived conservation benefits, risk of disease transfer, and companion cat welfare...

متن کاملEstimating the Economic Value of Lethal Versus Nonlethal Deer Control in Suburban Communities
Negative people/wildlife interaction has raised public interest in wildl$e population control. We present a contingent valuation study of alternative deer control measures consideredfor Hilton Head Island, SC. Lethal control using sharpshooters and nonlethal immuno-contraception techniques are evaluated. A mail-back survey was used to collect resident willingness-to-pay (WTP) information for re...
متن کاملOptimal Stochastic Control in Continuous Time with Wiener Processes: General Results and Applications to Optimal Wildlife Management
We present a stochastic optimal control approach to wildlife management. The objective value is the present value of hunting and meat, reduced by the present value of the costs of plant damages and traffic accidents caused by the wildlife population. First, general optimal control functions and value functions are derived. Then, numerically specified optimal control functions and value func...

More communities are experiencing problems associated with overabundant white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations. Public acceptance of approaches for managing deer may differ within communities. Although hunting with firearms is a common practice used to manage deer populations, many suburban communities only allow bowhunting. Our objectives were to assess suburban homeowners and ...
